The Macs would like to welcome our two new additions to the Grade 2 pipe corps - Liam Donaldson and Callum Douglas!
The season in now over (apart from a wee jaunt to Pitlochry in September) for the Grade 2 band - overall it has been a great season, with recent results being a 7th place at the scottish Championships, and we're very happy to report a 5th place at the World Championships, the final of which took place in the Grade 1 arena! A video of our performance is on the BBC here.
Time for a mid-season review. It has been a great start for the Grade 2 band - 6th place at the British Championships, just missing out on the prizes in 7th place at the UK championships, and an incredible 2nd place at the European championships!
The Grade 2 and Novice Juvenile bands have been working hard recently, raising money by playing in Dundee city centre. In order to keep competing and to keep teaching all of the talented kids in our band it’s essential that we keep the bank balance healthy. The Grade 2 band have also had a practice weekend away: An intensive 2 and a half days of solid piping and drumming in order to improve and best prepare ourselves for the upcoming season. We’d also like to say goodbye to drummer Jas Burns, who after many years with the band has decided to take a break to spend more time with his family. Thank you Jas for all of your dedication and hard work.
Members of the MacKenzie have been busy recently. Barham Brummage authored and Islay Spalding illustrated Slunge in the Bidet, a book of Pipe Band anecdotes - available for download on Amazon here. PM Anne Spalding led the High Schools of Dundee CCF band which she and daughter Islay teach, to a first place in the Scottish School Championships junior category. Well done to Anne and the many pupils who also play in our Novice Juvenile Band. Another first place went to piper Ben Flack, who as Pipe Major of Tayforth UOTC Pipes and Drums won the Northern Lights competition with piper Alastair MacLuskie on bass. And finally piper Craig Ward travelled to Brest to compete in the Bagad Championships with his “other band” Bagad Sonerien An Orient.
It is with sadness that we report that George Black, former leading drummer of the band for the 2006 and 2007 seasons, passed away this morning following a long battle with cancer. George had a long career with bands and taught many drummers over the years.
Our sympathies are extended to his family at this time.
Neil Nicholson was officially elected as Pipe Major at our 2013 AGM, with Allan Low stepping down due to family commitments. We'd like to thank Allan for all of his great work with the band since he took the position in 2002. Allan led the band through some difficult times in Grade 3 to winning the British, European, Worlds and Cowal Championships in 2008, leading to winning Champion of Champions and our return to Grade 2. He continues with the band as our Pipe Sergeant.
The Mac-Cals say farewell and thank you to Ross McGregor who leaves after four seasons with the band.
While we are sorry to see Ross leave, it could not be in better circumstances. Ross as Pipe Major has taken the 6/8th Boys Brigade to 2nd place in the World Championship this year, and having been upgraded from 4B to Grade 3B can no longer play for both bands.
Apologies for the lack of recent updates, they're coming soon! The season has now ended, highlights of which were the Grade 2 6th place at the European Championships, Grade 2 qualifying and overall 10th at the World Championships, and The Nov Juvs 6ths at the World Championships.
